What To Expect

Amsterdam Canal Ring
Amsterdam is famous for its canals, but why does Amsterdam have so many canals, what was their function, how are they used today and what stories are hidden in the stately homes bordering the canals?
We'll be walking through the biggest city development of the zeventeenth century. Here you can admire what the Dutch called their Golden Age. However, we will also discuss the dark sides of this so called Golden Age: the slave trade, colonialism and continuing war.

The Amstel
Amsterdam started as a small village in a delta around a dam in the Amstel river. Discover how this river still is the spiritual artery of the city.

Begijnhof
Small courtyards with lots of green, are surprising oases, hidden from the busy city life. Originally set up for the elderly, now the Begijnhof and other 'hofjes' are beloved dwellings for the Amsterdammers. Here we also have the possibility to visit a hidden church. In the Dutch seventeenth century it was possible to practice another than the official protestant religion, but these churches should be hidden.
