What To Expect

After the Rijksmuseum, Our Lord in the Attic is the second oldest museum in Amsterdam and certainly one of its most remarkable. The unique thing about this Amsterdam monument is that it has a clandestine character. Walking past the church, the passerby is unable to see any trace of it from the outside.

Oude Kerk
The oldest building and the oldest parish church in Amsterdam majestically rises above the Rosseburt, one of the world’s largest red-light districts and certainly it’s most famous. One would think it least likely that a red-light district should surround a religious temple of such scale and grandeur. Yet the connection has existed for centuries, the red-light district having been located around this area since the Middle Ages.

Red Light District
In this part of town since the 14th century, the Red Light District leaves nothing to the imagination. The Rossebuurt, as the locals call it, is unique in its risque character. Women parade their wares in red-fringed window parlors, leaving many tourists gaping and pointing in shock. By day businessmen amble the alleys and quays at lunch hour, while by night the Red Light District brims with giggling groups of women celebrating a hen night or rowdy groups of men on a stag trip.

Nieuwmarkt
The De Waag building, resembling a tiny fortress - is built directly in the centre of the New Market Square. The city’s medieval defensive walls ran through here in the Middle Ages, and De Waag functioned as the gates to the city. However, the city boundaries soon expanded, and this unusual building found a new use as the weights and measures office.

South Church (Zuiderkerk)
Zuiderkerk, or The South Church, was the city's first church constructed specifically for Protestant services, namely as a Dutch Reformed Church. It was erected between 1603 and 1611 and is located on the Zuiderkerkhof Square off the Sint Antoniesbreestraat. The distinctive church tower rises above the surrounding area and can be spotted from as far as Rembrandtplein and Waterlooplein. It is one of the most beautiful structures in Amsterdam and it offers fine panoramic views from its balconies.

Museum Het Rembrandthuis
The house where Rembrandt spent almost 20 years of his life between 1639 and 1658 is now one of Amsterdam's most interesting museums among the ones not visited by masses of tourists, who tend to flock to the more renown Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. The neighborhood surrounding Rembrandt's House is the historic Jewish quarter which gave birth to such luminaries as Spinoza. In the day when Rembrandt's house was built, many rich merchants as well as artists settled in this new part of town.
