Founded in the 13th century, this city has a long complicated past of religious persecutions, global trade and personal liberties who's influence has left many permanent marks on the local scenery.

Den Wallen is the medieval city centre and has been a focal point of this cultural evolution. Here you will view locations relevant to the Spanish Inquisition, the Calvanist Reformation, Dutch trade in the East-Indies, and the development of the Dutch Republic. In modern times it is known for it's nightlife scene, though what it is known for historically is far more complicated.

Centraal Station

Officially opened in 1889 the Centraal Station in Amsterdam has remained fundamental to connecting the city with the rest of the Netherlands. The construction of this station led to the transition of Amsterdam from a waterfront city to an inland city. The station was designed by architect Petrus Josephus Hubertus (Pierre) Cuypers.

St. Nicholas Basilica

The Basilica of Saint Nicholas was constructed between 1884 and 1887 and now stands across from Centraal Station. It served as the city’s primary Roman Catholic church after a prohibition against Catholicism starting in the 1580s and lasting until the 19th century.

Weeping Tower

The Schreierstoren is a medieval defense tower located near the city port, constructed in 1487. Originally part of the medieval city wall of Amsterdam, its name loosely translates to the weeping tower, which refers to the many wives of sailors that would wave a sad goodbye to their husbands from above as they departed to sea. English sea-explorer Henry Hudson set sail from this location on his expedition that led to the ‘discovery’ of Manhattan on behalf of the Dutch East Indies Company in 1609.

Oude Kerk

The Oude Kerk or ‘Old Church’ was built in the second half of the 13th century and it is considered the oldest surviving building in the city. The church was of the Roman Catholic denomination until 1578 when Catholic control was overthrown by the Calvanist Dutch Reformed Church. In recent years, in addition to the ecclesial function, the church serves as a contemporary art gallery and still showcases its historic period rooms to the public.
